What is the Therapy Air® Plus?

Therapy Air® Plus is a powerful air purifier that helps to protect you and your family from indoor air pollution in a validated three-step process.

Air pollution has been a problem for industrialised countries for many decades. It has become one of the most dangerous threats to people’s health. However, many people are unaware that air pollution can occur inside buildings as well as outdoors.

In reality, the potential levels of indoor air pollutants may be many times greater than those outside.

Given that we now spend up to 90 % of our time inside the home, at the office, at school or in public buildings, indoor air pollution has become a very important issue for everyone.
 		  

 
What is indoor air pollution?
Indoor air pollution can arise from many sources.

The particles of pollutant can land on the skin surface, or on the outer lining of the eye, or the lining of the nose or throat, or they may be inhaled and enter the airways. Once the pollutant has entered the body, it may then provoke various reactions that can result in illness.

How does Therapy Air® Plus make room air healthier?

Therapy Air® Plus is a powerful air purifier that helps to protect you and your family from indoor air pollution in a validateda three-step process:

1 HEPA-FILTER UNIT
Room air first passes through the HEPA-FILTER UNIT, where particles down to 0.3 micronsb in diameter are removed (e.g. pollen grains, dust particles, fungal spores, etc.). A specially designed seal holds these particles within the unit and prevents them flowing back into the room air.

2 ACTIVE OXYGEN MODULE
After step 1, the air is driven into the ACTIVE OXYGEN MODULE in which a plasma discharge unit ‘Ozone – Chamber’ creates ozone, a substance capable of destroying micro-organisms (e.g. bacteria, fungi) and of reducing the activity (via oxidation) of certain chemical pollutants.

3 CATALYST
The air then passes over the CATALYST, which contains an activated-carbon filter to remove any remaining ozone and eliminate the residues of unpleasant odours from the outgoing airc.
  
4 AROMATHERAPY (optional)
Before re-entering the room, the newly cleaned air can also be enriched with fragrances from one of the Swisso Logical AROMATHERAPY gelsd.

4 CATALYST
The air then passes over the CATALYST, which contains an activated-carbon filter to remove any remaining ozone and eliminate the residues of unpleasant odours from the outgoing airc.

Hepa-filter and the control of micro-organisms in indoor air

Most types of bacteria are 2-5 microns in length and 0.5 to 1.0 microns wide; viruses are at least 10 times smaller than this.
The HEPA-FILTER UNIT can reduce the number of micro-organisms in room air either by trapping them directly or by capturing
larger particles to which the micro-organisms may be attached.
The retention of such particles makes Therapy Air® Plus suitable for people with allergies, such as allergic asthma and/or allergic rhinitis.

ABOUT HEALTH

Can indoor air pollution affect health?
“yes it can!”

During recent years, there has been increasing concern about the adverse health effects from indoor air pollution. Commonly reported symptoms include:
  • Headache
  • Nasal congestion
  • Eye irritation
  • Influenza-like illness  (‘sick building syndrome’)

Some people also complain of:
  • Sneezing
  • Swollen airways
  • Breathing difficulties

The most common types of illness with an association to indoor air pollution are respiratory conditions (e.g. asthma, allergic rhinitis). However, health risks from indoor air pollution are not limited to the airways and may also include skin irritation, abnormal liver function, damage to nerves and/or brain, and even certain types of cancer.
 


 
How indoor air pollution affect our health?
 
 

Allergic asthma

Asthma is characterised by the reversible narrowing of the smaller airways in the lungs. The main symptoms of asthma include coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. 

In Western countries, asthma can affect up to 15% of the population and is particularly common in children. The number of people suffering from asthma is increasing in many countries, particularly in younger people.

Allergies* play a major role in causing asthma; more than 90% of asthmatic children and around 50% of asthmatic adults have allergies. Indoor irritants and allergens can trigger an asthma attack.  

In asthma, when the allergen is inhaled, it triggers an allergic reaction in the airways and causes them to become swollen and narrowed.

* An allergy is when the body’s immune system „overreacts“ to a certain substance (or allergen). Common allergens include pollen grains, dust mites, bacteria, fungal spores, pet hair. Etc...

  

Allergic asthma reasons.
 
 

Allergic rhinitis

Rhinitis is characterised by persistent sneezing, nasal discharge and a ‘blocked’ nose. Most cases of rhinitis are caused by an allergy, although chemical air pollutants can also cause rhinitis.  

Seasonal rhinitis, or ‘hay fever’, occurs mostly during the summer months. It is the most common of all allergies, occurring in up to 1 in 5 people worldwide. Other symptoms include itching of the eyes and in the back of the throat; up to 20% of sufferers also have seasonal asthma attacks.
Causal allergens include tree and grass pollens and mould spores.

Perennial allergic rhinitis occurs most of the time.
Sufferers are commonly allergic to dust mites and animal dander.
Dust mites are minuscule creatures (less than 0.5mm long) that feed on human skin flakes. Animal ‘dander’ refers to skin, hair or feathers and particles from cats, dogs, rodents, birds, etc.

Rhinitis also makes the lining of the nose more sensitive to other potential indoor air pollutants, such as cigarette smoke and chemicals in cleaning products.
 		 Seasonal rhinitis, or ‘hay fever’, occurs mostly during the summer months.

At the heart of the Therapy Air® Plus is a unique and highly effective technology:  the hepa filter.
(high-efficiency particulate air).

Therapy Air® Plus removes irritant particles from room air, protecting people’s health from indoor pollutants.

The HEPA filter technology assures maximum efficiency of 99.97% particle capture down to 0.3 microns.
Unsealed air cleaner systems require frequent maintenance and expensive filter changes to minimise static and air velocity, pressure problems and particle escape.

The HEPA filter also helps to control the micro-organisms in the indoor air.
Bacteria range in size from 0.1 to 1.5 microns and viruses are between 0.05 to 0.1 microns. These micro-organisms are either trapped directly by the HEPA filter or captured as the micro-organisms are carried in the air by larger particulates. Once captured by the HEPA filter these and other micro-organisms quickly expire due to the environment which is unsuitable for their existence.

SPECIAL

Association for Environmental and Interior Analytics tests the new Therapy Air® Plus

Surface measurement in 30 representative households
From late August to mid-November 2005, the Association for Environmental and Interior Analytics (GUI) in Mönchengladbach (Germany) subjected the Therapy Air® Plus air purifier to a surface measurement. The air was measured in 30 representative households. The Therapy Air® Plus was set up and used for one week in places where a significant concentration of substances of the type that triggers allergies and particulate matter had previously been recorded.
The GUI then carried out another measurement and came to the conclusion that “the positive conclusion was backed up by unambiguous statistics.” (Field Study conducted by the Association for Environmental and Interior Analytics (GUI)).
The Therapy Air® Plus has now been certified by both TÜV NORD Systems GmbH & Co. KG and the GUI to provide an optimal air purity quality.
“Air purifiers tested by neutral organizations make a major contribution towards creating ‘healthy interiors’”, affirmed the head of the study, Dr. Dipl.-Ing. Andreas Winkens VDI, the Managing Director of the Association for Environmental and Interior Analytics.

99% PURIFIED AIR EVERYWHERE
As of July 15, 2005, Therapy Air® Plus air purifier is the only device on the market featuring the TÜV NORD test certificate “Suitable for allergic people.” TÜV NORD Systems GmbH & Co. KG tested the air purifier between January and July 2005 before awarding it this certification.
The objective of the tests was to determine how well the device performed in purifying indoor air “in terms of respirable particulate matter, molds and allergens.” The ozone emission rate was also ascertained. The indoor area where the air purifier was tested, under conditions complying with regulations, had a volume of 52 cubic yards (40 cubic meters) of air.
Assessing the test results.
The Therapy Air® Plus test shows that, while the device is in use, “none of the threshold values that trigger currently recognized medical and/or allergological reactions are reached, even in areas with a high degree of contamination from pathogenous materials contained in the air in the form of particles.”

“Based on the normal pollution levels in enclosed areas and the environment, i.e.
  • 20 to 100 µg particulate matter per m3 air,
  • 10 to 50 ng allergens per m3 air
  • 100 to 500 KbE mold spores per m3 air.
  • The air purifier that was tested achieved results, per m3 air, of 1 µg particulate matter, 1 ng allergens and 10 KbE mold spores”.  

Air turnover rate per hour and ozone emission rate  
With an air volume of, e.g., 65 cubic yards (50 m3)—corresponding to a floor surface area of 24 square yards (20 m2)—the Therapy Air® Plus achieves the recommended air turnover rate of two changes of air per hour. The device's target specification for air quality and the reduction in airborne pollution is thus achieved after several changes of air.
The measured ozone emission rate of under 20 µg per hour achieves an ozone concentration in the air of 2 µg per m3 when the device operates continually. By comparison:
“this value is smaller by a factor of 10 than the threshold specified for awarding the ‘Blue Angel’ label for printers, copiers and multifunctional devices.”
